Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy

Outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (OPAT) is now the standard of care for a wide range of infections. Outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (OPAT) is now accepted as standard care in most communities. Antibiotic therapy may be given at home, in an office-based setting, or through a hospital-based infusion program.

Enteral Nutrition is a special formula of essential nutritional elements administered through a tube in the stomach or small intestine.  Enteral nutrition is, in fact, sometimes referred to as ‘tube feeding’. Depending on the individual patient needs, enteral formulas can be administered via pump, gravity or syringe all of which deliver the formula directly to the stomach or small intestine.

Enteral nutrition formulas contain protein, fat, carbohydrates, and other nutrients needed. These products are manufactured commercially and selected based on individual calorie needs. A few brands provided by APS include:

  • Nutren®
  • Nutren Jr.®
  • Fibersource®
  • Isosource®
  • Peptamen®
  • Replete®
  • Pediasure®
  • Boost Kids®

HEMOPHILIA THERAPIES

All hemophilia medication used to be derived from human plasma, which was dangerous for people with hemophilia. In the 1980s many people, as many as 80% of people with hemophilia, contracted the HIV virus. However, with the approval of recombinant DNA technology to produce factor using other animal cells, infusing with factor has become much safer.

There are still a few types of hemophilia that require human plasma derived factor. The viral inactivation process is pretty thorough, and these medications are generally considered safe.

There are several large pharmaceutical companies that manufacture blood coagulation factor. These are a few of the brand name factors out there that APS can provide:

Hydration Therapy

Hydration infusion therapy provides critical fluids and electrolytes to persons suffering severe dehydration.  Severe dehydration can be caused by several events.

  • frequent vomiting from illness or during pregnancy
  • insufficient fluid intake when suffering from the flu or flu-like illnesses.  The elderly are especially suseptible to this.
  • severe dehydration from strenuous athlectic activity – especially on very warm days.
  • normal physicial responses to medications such as chemotherapy drugs

Stable patients can receive physician prescribed hydration infusion therapy in their homes.  Patients treated at home typically recover faster and enjoy a better quality of life during recovery.

The prescribing physician works with our clinical pharmacist at APS to determine whether an ambulatory or stationary infusion pump or gravity drip infusion is appropriate.  The physician and pharmacist decide the amount and type of fluid formula and, if appropriate,  what electrolytes to add to the fluid.
